About NHS Choose and Book
Over the last two years the NHS has been rolling out an electronic and internet based
system for booking appointments with specialists. It is called Choose and Book.
How it works
- If you and your GP agree that you need an appointment with a specialist, then the
Choose and Book system shows your GP which hospitals or clinics are available for
your treatment.
- Your GP may be able to make an appointment at your convenience there and then, whilst
you at still at the surgery. Alternatively you may want more time to consider the
options and can make the appointment on-line later using the information in your
referral letter.
- Patients of the NHS are given ‘Free Choice’ to select any hospital in England funded
by the NHS (this includes NHS hospitals and some independent hospitals). Of course,
you are also at liberty to go privately if you so wish, in which case, your GP will
be advising on appointments outside the Choose and Book system.
How it is being used
- As of February 2008 it was reported that all NHS hospitals are using Choose and Book,
along with 90 per cent of GP practices in England. At that time there were 22,000
bookings taking place every day, 115,000 every week through Choose and Book.
